$126,000 IN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANTS IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE



Through its annual open grant cycle, the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County is awarding $126,204 to seventeen non-profit agencies serving our area. This support is made possible by donors’ generous contributions to the Foundation’s discretionary endowments. This includes unrestricted endowments as well as those addressing specific fields of donor interest such as children, basic needs, and arts.

 

“In addition to granting in all our traditional fields, we gave special attention this year to basic needs,” according to Foundation President and CEO Shari Woodbury. “Our Board of Directors had earmarked some funds to ensure that members of our community who are not faring well in the recession do not go lacking in such basic areas as food, shelter and health.”

 

Grants supported by this targeted allocation include the following:

 

Trinity Episcopal Church

Interfaith Low Barrier Emergency Winter Shelter - $15,000

Establish a multi-site low barrier winter shelter to serve those who cannot be admitted to other shelters in town.

 

Hoosier Hills Food Bank

HHFB Garden Project - $9,707

Implement a full pilot Garden Project that will grow fresh produce on donated land with volunteer labor.

 

Monroe County United Ministries, Inc.

Childcare Program - $8,060

Subsidize affordable childcare for preschool children.

 

Wheeler Mission Ministries

Hebron Hardwoods Edger - $3,500

Purchase a Wood-Mizer portable twin blade edger, to be used in saw mill at recovery program for people overcoming drug and alcohol addiction.

 

YMCA

Family Energize - $3,500

Pilot program to help patients of the Volunteers In Medicine clinic to make healthier choices, live healthier lives and build stronger relationships.

 

 

The remaining grants are awarded in a range of quality-of-life areas supported by the Community Foundation, which include arts and culture, social and health services, education, recreation, beautification and preservation, animals and the environment.

 

BCT Management, Inc./Buskirk-Chumley Theater

BCT Box Office/Downtown Visitors Center Renovation Project - $10,000

Install permanent concession service open to Theater Lobby and make aesthetic and safety feature improvements to current Box Office space in summer 2010.

 

Cardinal Stage Company

Let There Be Light - $8,530

Purchase supplemental lighting equipment for their performance areas at Waldron Arts Center and the Buskirk Chumley Theater.

 

Ellettsville Fire Department

Voice Pagers - $2,806

Purchase equipment for new firefighters.

 

Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools

Walk the Watershed - $6,000

Pilot an integrated program combining service learning and cross-curricular learning.

 

Friends of T.C. Steele State Historic Site

Arts Empowered Education - $4,320

Field trips for Monroe County 4th grade students to enhance their education in Indiana arts, history and culture.

 

Monroe County Historical Society, Inc.

On-line Photo Archive - $5,883

Document and digitize over 7,300 photographs in the History Center’s collection, and make them available via the Web.

 

Options for Better Living, Inc.

School to Career Alliance - $11,842

Promote school success and enhance post-secondary achievement by ensuring students with disabilities transition effectively to post school environments.

 

Stone Belt, Inc.

The Incredible Years - $6,840

Implement local use of an award-winning social skills training program which involves a comprehensive set of curricula.

 

Sycamore Land Trust, Inc.

Outdoor area renovation - $6,000

Convert unused swimming pool to native prairie and wildflower planting area.

 

Richland Bean Blossom Community School Corporation

Dads at School - $3,216

Promote involvement of dads in school and in their child's education.

 

WFHB Community Radio

Digital Radio Conversion Fund - $6,000

Purchase equipment necessary to convert to digital broadcasting.

 

WonderLab Museum

The Science of Toys Exhibition at the WonderLab Museum - $15,000

Toward rental of the exhibition "Toys: The Inside Story" for June-Aug 2011.
