Michael and Tina LeBien Graduation Scholarship

Purpose of the Scholarship

  1. The scholarship is designed to give financial assistance to students desiring to pursue preparation for a career in a trade or practically skilled profession.
  2.  The scholarship operates on the premise that non-academically inclined students also deserve financial assistance for educational development. The scholarship is for students who choose a path other than a four-year college or who would otherwise not qualify for a traditional college or university.
  3. The scholarship is exclusively for individuals who have overcome substantiated child abuse/neglect and who are between 16-19 years of age.
  4. Preference given to scholarship candidates from Monroe County.

Scholarship Selection Committee
The Scholarship Committee is responsible for selecting the recipients of the scholarship. The committee includes professionals and others knowledgeable and experienced in child abuse/neglect, who are well qualified to evaluate scholarship candidates.

Candidate Selection Process
Candidates are required to complete and submit an online application with the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County

  1. The application requires the candidate to express what school or program he/she wishes to attend and why.
  2. Application essay questions provide an opportunity for the candidate to express his/her plan for successful completion of a selected program.
  3. The candidate will provide the name of one professional who works with children in crisis as a reference. The professional must submit a recommendation in writing to the Community Foundation and be prepared to meet/speak with the Selection Committee, if requested, to support their recommendation.
  4. The candidate will specify the tuition, fees, and required materials for the proposed course of study, and provide documented verification of these expenses with the application.
  5. Part-time programs are eligible for consideration
  6. All substantiated CHINS will be included.
  7. While high achieving students may be considered, it is not a prerequisite for the scholarship.
